The 38-year campaign, codenamed Operation Banner, went through a number of phases. No less than 10,000 troops were on active service throughout the campaign and at one point as many as 30,000 men and women were deployed on Ulster's streets.

Aaron Edwards is a Senior Lecturer in Defence and International Affairs at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He holds a PhD in political science from the Queen's University of Belfast and his main research interests span the Northern Ireland troubles, terrorism, insurgency, conflict resolution and peacebuilding. His books include Transforming the Peace Process in Northern Ireland: From Terrorism to Democratic Politics (co-edited with Stephen Bloomer, 2008), The Northern Ireland Conflict: A Beginner's Guide (co-authored with Cillian McGrattan, 2010) and Defending the Realm? The Politics of Britain's Small Wars since 1945 (2012).
