Bauhaus New England serves as a visual tribute to the enduring influence of the Bauhaus philosophy on privately owned residences in New England. In a collection of striking black-and-white photographs and selected essays, the book offers intimate portraits of rarely seen historic houses and an architectural legacy at risk of fading away.
Mark Römisch’s images capture the homes’ poetic personality as lived space through their unique blendof form, function and the organic integration of nature. The architectural portraits explore light, geometry and the dialogue between modernist architecture and nature. Essays by art historians and personal contributors, including Walter Gropius’s granddaughter, Erika Pfammatter, contextualise the photos within the broader Bauhaus legacy in America and the intersection of architecture, art and transatlantic history.

Mark Römisch ist ein preisgekrönter Dozent und Fotograf, dessen Arbeit sich mit der Schnittstelle zwischen Kunst, Architektur und Kulturgeschichte befasst. Nach mehreren Jahren am MIT lehrt er nun an der Harvard University. Seine Fotografien werden international veröffentlicht und ausgestellt. Er ist Autor des Buches FORM and LANDSCAPE - Bauhaus in New England (2019).
Mark Römisch is an award-winning German-born photographer and lecturer whose work explores the intersection of art, architecture and cultural memory. He teaches at Harvard University, following several years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His photography is published and exhibited internationally.
