First published in 1971, this first full-length treatment of Shaw as director is important for several reasons: Shaw was one of the few major playwrights who frequently directed his own works; he was a good director; and he is an early example of the modern idea of the director as guiding artist in the production of a play.
Bernard F. Dukore is University Distinguished Professor Emeritus in Theatre Arts and Humanities at Virginia Tech, USA. He has written extensively on Bernard Shaw and other modern dramatists, including Shaw's fellow-Nobel prizewinner, Harold Pinter.
