Officier de la marine royale britannique, James Cook (1728-1779) commande la Resolution lors de son deuxième grand voyage autour du monde, de 1772 à 1775. Fils d'un journalier du Yorkshire devenu le meilleur navigateur de son temps grâce à son travail de cartographe pendant la guerre de Sept Ans, il reçoit de l'Amirauté et de la Royal Society la mission de trancher, une fois pour toutes, la question du continent austral. Le 17 janvier 1773, il devient le premier navigateur à franchir le cercle polaire antarctique, ruinant deux mille ans de spéculations savantes sur une Terre du Sud peuplée et fertile.
