Robert Jay Lifton is a former Lecturer in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Psychology at The City University of New York. The overall themes of his work have been the holocaust and transformation. His books include Death in Life: Survivors of Hiroshima (which won a National Book Award); The Nazi Doctors: Medical Killing and the Psychology of Genocide (awarded a Los Angeles Times book prize); Home from the War: Learning from Vietnam Veterans (finalist of a National Book Award and reissued in 2005 with a new preface on the war in Iraq); Destroying the World to Save It (about the fanatical Japanese cult Aum Shinrikyo); Superpower Syndrome: Americas Apocalyptic Confrontation with the World; and Crimes of War: Iraq, which was co-edited with Irene Gendzier and Richard Falk.
