The last decade has witnessed an expansion of social protection schemes such as cash transfers, health insurance, and pensions in Sub-Saharan Africa. This book focuses on 3 important sectors of informal work: transport, construction, and micro-trade in Kenya and Tanzania.

Lone Riisgaard, PhD, is an associate professor at the Department of Social Sciences and Business at Roskilde University, Denmark. Winnie Mitullah is a research professor at the Institute for Development Studies, University of Nairobi with a background in political science and public administration.
