A New Philosophy of Opera

Known as opera's "disrupter-in-residence", Yuval Sharon has never adhered to the art form's conventions. In his many productions in both the United States and Europe, he challenges the perception of opera as aloof by, among other things, urging the performance of operas in "non-places", encouraging the use of amplification and shuffling the structure of classic works. A New Philosophy of Opera is itself a work of art with profound philosophical implications that will stand the test of time.

Yuval Sharon is an opera director and a MacArthur fellow. He founded The Industry in Los Angeles and has served as artistic director of the Detroit Opera since 2020. He will direct the Metropolitan Opera's new Ring cycle beginning in 2028.
